Goals for 2012

Found this quote at my favorite money-saving blog:

I've been thinking about what sewing-related goals I want to accomplish this year.  Now that I have them, I wanted to post them here so that I have help keeping myself accountable. :)

1.  Make at least 100 Christmas gift bags of various sizes.  I have lots of Christmas fabric and have been wanting to make more gift bags.  I love wrapping gifts in them - they're beautiful and reusable.

2. Read a book about pattern making to keep up with my daughter.  She's made quite a few costumes with her own patterns and even without patterns.  She'll be posting them soon.

3. Have at least four sewing camps this summer.  Last summer was such fun!  I had some very sweet girls take my classes.  They were all enthusiastic learners and a joy to teach. :)

4. Finish three wall quilts that I have started.

5. Help each of my six children make something of their own choice.  That might not sound like much, but eighteen projects will be a challenge with our busy schedule!  :)

6. Make at least one project per month from my Pinterest idea lists.

Verse Pillow

Now that Christmas is over and the gifts have all been unwrapped and received, I thought I'd share one thing that I gave to my husband.  This was more a gift for both of us because it's not very masculine, but I thought it would look great on our bed. :)  I printed the verse on linen with help from this tutorial, which I found through Pinterest.

Character Sketch Gift Idea

If you're looking for inexpensive, meaningful, or homemade gifts to give this Christmas, I have an idea for you.  I found out about this great site - Wordle.net  the other day and thought I would make cute, personalized gifts for my kiddos. It's reasonably priced, quick and adorable.  All you need is a frame, paper and colored ink in your printer. :)

Wordle is very easy to use.  Just click "Create" at the top of the page and start typing in your text.  If you want the words to be different sizes, you simply type those particular words in twice, three times, etc. and each time you type that word in, it will increase the size of the word.  Sentences will not work with this program very well.  You need single words because the program jumbles them up when it's laying them out.

When you're done with the text, hit "OK".  It will then take you to a page where you can play - this is the fun part!  You get to pick the font, the color scheme and layout.  If you don't like the color schemes given, you can find lists of the HTML color codes here and here.  It took a bit of playing to find the layouts I liked, but I was able to complete six - one for each of my kids - in a bit over an hour.

Here's my finished products.  I just picked up $2 frames at Walmart.  I'm still deciding if I will dress these up a bit.   There's so many different things you can do with them!

For my sweet teens: I'm thinking I'll add some scrapbook paper to these to border them and dress them up a bit.

For my middle kiddos: ages 10 and 8

For my littles: ages 6 and 4

For the younger children, I used simpler words that are actually in their vocabulary at this point in their lives so that they could read them for themselves.  I hope they like them.  I sure had fun creating them! :)
